Our
Story

Northern New Mexico STEAM Coalition

  • Creating partnerships to support STEAM Education in Northern NM by developing collective resources to learn from and with each other.

  • Ensure children and youth in Northern NM have access to STEAM learning & career opportunities inside and outside of schools.

  • Expand opportunities for students to explore STEAM career pathways.

The Northern NM STEAM Coalition begin meeting during COVID, building on years of collaborative work between LANL Foundation and LANL CPO to support in-school, out-of-school and career pathways STEAM education for the 21st Century in Northern NM. Collectively we’ve decided to focus on STEAM vs STEM, because the Northern NM community of STEAM partners in Northern NM are committed to lifting up the role of arts – on its own, and as well as integrated with STEM to strengthen students opportunities to learn in ways that foster creativity, problem solving, and joy!

Dear New Mexico Champions for STEM Education,

The newly funded STEM Innovation Network (STEMinNM) is seeking applicants to support and improve STEM learning across New Mexico.

The STEM Innovation Network was established through state legislative funding in collaboration with the New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) to advance and support STEM learning across K–12 education in alignment with NMPED priorities. The purpose of the network is to connect systems and build a cohesive infrastructure for New Mexico’s PreK–college STEM pathways that develop talent for 21st-century STEM careers.

To achieve this, the network focuses on three key priorities, supported by efforts to foster collaboration, build local capacity, and strengthen STEM identities and career readiness:

  1. Inquiry-Based STEM Learning in All New Mexico K–12 Classrooms

  2. Access to Out-of-School Time (OST) STEM Enrichment

  3. Strengthening Connections Between K–12 Education and New Mexico Industry

Please share the STEMinNM Mini-grant Application form with your contacts across New Mexico.  The mini-grants are open to the following organizations:

  • K–12 schools, districts, and education cooperatives

  • Out of School Time providers

  • For profit and nonprofit organizations

  • Higher Education Institutions

  • Workforce/Industry partners

  • STEM professional learning organizations

STEAM SUMMIT

June 30, 2025

The STEAM Summit was a partnership between LANL and LANL Foundation highlighting the work of the Northern NM STEAM Coalition!

Thom Mason, the Director of LANL, spoke about the importance of  STEM education for preparing our future workforce, he also emphasized the importance of ensuring our children and youth have the foundational knowledge they will need to use 21st technologies wisely – by learning how to solve the problems themselves!

Thank you to our esteemed panelists:

  • Anita Gonzales, Deputy Director NM MESA, State Representative for San Miguel and Torrence Counties

  • Estevan Gonzales, Rural Youth Advisory Council

  • Melissa Sandoval, Superintendent Las Vegas City Schools

  • Scott Groginsky, Deputy Secretary of Workforce Solutions

Estevan Gonzales, a youth advocate from Las Vegas, spoke eloquently about the importance of creating a net for our youth – a net that helps to recognize our youth’s brilliances and ensures they have the pathways they need to live and thrive in our Northern NM Communities.

The Northern NM STEAM Coalition is bringing prek-12, higher education, out-of-school, industry and community partners together to develop a framework and vision for strengthening STEAM Education opportunities in Northern NM – in schools, in out-of-school programs, and through career connected learning.

Please share your upcoming events and celebrations, or join the NNM STEAM Coalition here.
